During the rainy season, flooding becomes a familiar concern in many parts of the Philippines. Many of us still remember the devastating floods brought by Typhoon Tino in Cebu. Lives were lost, homes were destroyed, and entire communities were left underwater. Ironically, it wasn’t the strong winds that caused the greatest damage—it was the overwhelming floodwaters.
As Christians, moments like these can also remind us of important spiritual truths. Rain is a gift from God. It waters the earth, nourishes crops, and sustains life. The Bible even describes rain as a blessing from the Lord.
“He will send rain for your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains…” — Deuteronomy 11:14
Yet when rain falls faster than the land can absorb it, something meant to give life can instead bring destruction. The problem isn’t the rain itself. Often, it’s the blocked drainage, clogged waterways, and systems that aren’t prepared to carry what has been poured out.
The same principle can apply to our spiritual lives.
God Is Our Unlimited Source of Blessings
God’s love, grace, wisdom, peace, and provision are limitless. He is our unfailing source.
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…” — Ephesians 3:20
If God has unlimited resources, why doesn’t He pour every blessing into our lives all at once?
Perhaps it’s because He knows our capacity better than we do.
Imagine a large water tank connected to a small pipe. No matter how full the tank is, the amount of water reaching the faucet depends on the size and condition of the pipe. If the pipe is clogged or too narrow, increasing the water pressure won’t solve the problem—it may even cause damage.
Likewise, God’s blessings are never the problem. Our capacity to receive and steward them often is.
What Can Block God’s Blessings?
Our hearts can become spiritually clogged.
Unforgiveness, pride, selfish ambition, fear, compromise, misplaced priorities, and a lack of commitment can all restrict God’s work in our lives. Even if God pours out greater blessings, we may not yet be ready to steward them well.
Instead of drawing us closer to Him, success can make us self-sufficient. Prosperity can feed pride. Comfort can slowly replace our dependence on God.
God doesn’t withhold blessings because He is unwilling. He prepares us because He loves us.
“To whom much is given, much will be required.” — Luke 12:48
Spiritual maturity always comes before greater responsibility.
Pray for Capacity, Not Just Blessings
Many of us pray, “Lord, bless me.”
But perhaps a better prayer is:
“Lord, remove whatever is clogging my heart. Increase my capacity to steward everything You want to entrust to me.”
The Holy Spirit transforms our character, clears away what hinders us, and enlarges our capacity. He doesn’t simply want us to receive more—He wants us to become faithful channels of God’s blessings.
“Whoever believes in Me… rivers of living water will flow from within them.” — John 7:38
We Are Blessed to Bless Others
God never intended His blessings to stop with us. Every gift, opportunity, resource, and provision He gives is meant to glorify Him and bless others.
As the rains continue this season, let every downpour remind you of this truth:
God’s supply is never lacking. The greater question is whether our hearts are prepared to receive His blessings, steward them faithfully, and allow them to overflow into the lives of others.
May God clear every spiritual blockage, enlarge your capacity, and make you a faithful steward of His abundant blessings—for His glory and for the good of many.
