During the last week of May, I had an unusual experience that stayed with me for days.
I was in that state between sleeping and waking—my eyes were closed, my body was resting, yet my mind was fully alert. What made it remarkable was that I could clearly see an object before me, even though my physical eyes were shut.
Whether it was a vision or a dream, I cannot say for certain. What I do know is that it was vivid and unmistakable.
I saw a bottle of oil with a nozzle, like a typical dispensing bottle. At the bottom was about one-fourth salt, while the rest of the bottle was filled to the brim with oil.
The image puzzled me. Why oil and salt? I wasn’t thinking about either of them. Yet throughout the week, these two symbols kept resonating in my heart.
The Meaning of the Oil
In Scripture, oil is often a symbol of the Holy Spirit.
When David was anointed with oil, “the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David” (1 Samuel 16:13).
Oil represents:
The presence and power of the Holy Spirit
God’s anointing and calling
Spiritual readiness and vigilance
God’s blessing and provision
Above all, oil points to God’s empowering work in the life of a believer.
The Meaning of the Salt
Salt carries a different but equally important message in the Bible.
Jesus declared:
“You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13).
Salt symbolizes:
Purity and holiness
Preservation from corruption
Covenant faithfulness
Wisdom in speech
Godly influence in the world
Salt affects everything it touches. Even a small amount can make a significant impact.
A Foundation of Character
When I shared the vision with my family, our discussion led to an interesting observation.
Salt does not dissolve in oil. Instead, it tends to settle at the bottom unless it is continually stirred.
In the vision, the salt was at the bottom while the oil filled the rest of the bottle.
The symbolism became clearer.
God’s anointing (oil) and godly character (salt) are meant to go together.
The Lord has already poured out His Spirit upon His people. He has empowered us through the Holy Spirit. Yet His anointing is most effective when it rests upon a foundation of purity, faithfulness, wisdom, and Christlike character.
The salt formed the base.
The oil filled the vessel.
The picture seemed to say:
God fills our lives with His Spirit, but He desires that our lives be grounded in purity and faithfulness.
The Significance of the Bottle
One detail stood out even more—the bottle itself, complete with a nozzle for dispensing.
A bottle like this is designed not just for storage, but for use. What is inside is meant to be poured out and applied.
This adds another layer to the image:
The oil is not meant to stay hidden, but to flow
What God places within us is meant to be released
The vessel becomes useful when what is inside is made available
It speaks of a life that carries something from God and makes it accessible to others.
Salt, Oil, and Light
Then my father shared a practical lesson from the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.
With electricity unavailable for nearly two months, many families improvised lamps using a small container, oil, salt, and a matchstick. It provided light while helping conserve precious resources.
Immediately, I was reminded of Jesus’ words:
“You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)
The connection was beautiful.
Salt speaks of purity.
Oil speaks of the Holy Spirit.
The flame speaks of a life that shines for Christ.
A Christian becomes most effective when their life is grounded in purity, filled with the Holy Spirit, and ready to be ignited for God’s purposes.
When that happens, the light of Christ shines brightly through them.
A Final Thought
The vision was simple: salt at the foundation, oil filling the vessel, and a bottle designed for pouring out.
Yet its message was profound.
God is not merely looking for gifted people. He is looking for faithful people. The Holy Spirit’s power is most beautifully displayed through lives marked by holiness, faithfulness, and obedience.
As Scripture reminds us:
“Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” (2 Corinthians 1:21–22)
The salt preserves what is pure. The oil empowers what is called. And the vessel becomes useful when what God has placed within is poured out. Together, they shape a life that shines with the light of Christ.
